Best management practices topic of July 14 Texas Pecan Growers webinar

The webinar is intended to provide a timely review of the best management practices needed to produce a successful pecan crop in 2020.

Three Texas Department of Agriculture pesticide license continuing education credits, CEUs, will be available to private pesticide license holders. There are two CEUs offered in integrated pest management and one in pesticide laws and regulations.

The program’s topics will include production and pest management issues, including insects, diseases, weed control, fertilization, irrigation and other factors causing tree stress and affecting management decisions.

 

The agenda will include:

  • 9:30-10 a.m. – Herbicide review, Stephen Janak, AgriLife Extension program specialist in horticulture, Hallettsville.
  • 10-11 a.m. – Pesticide laws and regulations, Mark Matocha, Ph.D., AgriLife Extension specialist in agricultural and environmental safety, College Station.
  • 11-11:30 a.m. – Pecan scab and bacterial leaf scorch update, Young-ki Jo, Ph.D., AgriLife Extension specialist in plant pathology and microbiology, College Station.
  • 1-1:15 p.m. – Texas Pecan Growers Association announcements, Blair Krebs, TPGA executive director, Bryan.
  • 1:15-2 p.m. – Pecan fruit development, tree stress implications, Monte Nesbitt, AgriLife Extension program specialist in horticulture, College Station.
  • 2–2:30 p.m. – Pecan integrated pest management in West Texas, Joel Arce, AgriLife Extension agent in integrated pest management, El Paso.
  • 2:30–3 p.m. – Adjusting best management practices for pecan crop load, Larry Stein, Ph.D., AgriLife Extension horticulturist, Uvalde.
