The sport of horse judging combines a 4-h or FFA student’s horse knowledge with decision making and public speaking talents.  Students are evaluated on their ability to quickly prioritize the placings of a mock horse show class against the standard for four to six types of events. The student’s scores for classes are compared against officials for a portion of their score.  The balance of the score comes from the quality of the judger’s presentation of reasons, often delivered (memorized) long after the horses have left the arena. Youth compete as individuals as well as being a member of a three to four person team.  The top three individual’s scores count toward the team score.

Interested youth can join the program at any time throughout the year, however will benefit most from joining in the October timeframe.  Contests are held throughout the year at various levels and youth can participate at the level of their ability and goals.  Practices are most Tuesdays from 6:30p.m. -8:30 p.m. at the Extension Office, with additional practices in the spring and summer for advanced competitions.
